Portland, Ore.-based artist Val Britton, commissioned to create public artwork for the second phase of Charlotte Douglas International Airport’s Concourse A expansion, will give a virtual presentation at 11:15 a.m. Friday, Sept. 16, as part of a UNC Charlotte College of Arts + Architecture visual artist lecture series. Britton creates immersive, collaged works on paper and site-specific installations that explore physical and psychological spaces. Her fragmented, exploded landscapes draw on the language of maps to explore memory, history, and the possibilities of abstraction. 

She was commissioned by the San Francisco Arts Commission to create a permanent public artwork, “Voyage,” for the San Francisco International Airport that opened to the public in 2015. The work was recognized as Best In Public Art Projects by Americans for the Arts Public Art Network Year in Review.

Her mezzanine art wall for the Charlotte airport will be inspired by aerial views, mapping, topography and research into the history and environment of the Queen City. Britton will incorporate this information info an abstract, pulsating landscape that uses the symbols and shapes derived from mapping to depict an imaginary world.
