Join ASC for a Little Sugar Creek Greenway Public Art Bike Tour with ArtWalks CLT. Due to weather, this bike tour has been rescheduled to Saturday, May 13, 2023, from 11 a.m. to approximately 1 p.m.

Grab a bike and explore nature along Charlotte-Mecklenburg’s greenway system and parks and see more than a dozen works of public art, from sculptures and artist-designed benches to murals and other placemaking efforts. Participants will need to bring their own bikes.

The leisurely bike tour begins at the Little Sugar Creek Greenway trailhead near the intersection of Brandywine and Westfield roads (directly behind Park Road Shopping Center). Plan to gather at the trailhead around 10:50 a.m. ahead of the tour, which will be led by an experienced group bike leader from the Spoke Easy Bike Shop.

Participants will learn more about ASC, which manages the public art programs for Mecklenburg County and the City of Charlotte. Participants will bike from Park Road Shopping Center to NoDa on our greenways while stopping to hear from local artists about the creative process along the way. All biking will be on the greenway, a city sidewalk or a dedicated bike lane.

The tour ends at the entrance to Cordelia Park at the intersection of North Davidson Street and Parkwood Avenue. Check out a map of the bike tour route. Participants can return to the starting point along the same route on the greenway or head to lunch at Optimist Hall, which has food stalls, outdoor seating and refreshments.

The event is free and pre-registration is needed. Participants will need to bring their own bikes. On-street parking is available on Westfield Road. The trailhead is behind Park Road Shopping Center, where you grab coffee or provisions from one of the center’s shops and be close to the starting point.

Thank you to Partners for Parks for sponsoring this event.

Partners for Parks aims to improve the quality of life for the citizens of Mecklenburg County and the surrounding region by preserving, promoting, and enhancing the parks, greenways, open spaces, active play and recreational opportunities within our community.  For more information, visit www.partnersforparks.org or follow @partnersforparks on Instagram.

Since 1993, ASC has managed the public art programs for the City of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County.  In 2003, Mecklenburg County Board of Commissioners and the Charlotte City Council adopted ordinances that appropriate 1 percent of eligible capital improvement project funds for public art.  The ordinance helps ensure that artworks enhance our public spaces and become an integral part of urban and economic development efforts.

ArtWalks CLT connects the community to local public art and artists through free self-guided neighborhood artwalks accessible on your mobile device. Artwalks are available for NoDa, Plaza-Midwood, South End, Elizabeth, Historic West End, the East Side and uptown. Want to start walking? Go to www.artwalksclt.com or follow @artwalksclt on Instagram.
