History
JazzArts Charlotte® is a Charlotte-based nonprofit arts organization committed to connecting community and developing an audience for jazz through quality education, performance excellence and musician support. Established in 2009 by co-founders Lonnie and Ocie Davis, JazzArts strives to serve as a catalyst for cultural enrichment and music education that brings creative inspiration to the lives of people in the Charlotte region.
Since its founding, JazzArts has grown considerably to include two primary programmatic offerings: The JAZZ ROOM @ The Stage Door Theater and a JazzArts Academy comprised of youth workshops and ensembles, camps and community engagement with local schools and organizations. The JAZZ ROOM is a multi-performance, monthly concert offered in
uptown Charlotte taking place on Friday and Saturday nights. Earned revenue from The JAZZ ROOM coupled with contributed revenue fuels the JazzArts Academy, which provides jazz music education for thousands of students annually.
The Role: JazzArts Academy Instructor
JazzArts Academy Instructors are:
• Expert educators with special study and teaching experience in early childhood education
• Musicians with knowledge and an understanding of jazz
• High energy individuals with an understanding and willingness to build community within the program and institution
• Developmentally and culturally aware and responsive to families attending programs at JazzArts Charlotte
• Familiar with student-centered teaching strategies
• Dedicated to the mission of JazzArts Charlotte and a desire to grow within the program.
Professional Responsibilities
• Serve as the lead educator for a new 3-5 grade music assembly program with an emphasis on jazz education.
• Prepare and deliver lessons using provided curriculum and adapt materials as necessary.
• Attend 1-2 faculty meetings per term to prepare for upcoming classes, discuss best practices and partake in professional development
• Must have availability in March 2025 for rehearsals and performances.
Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree in music or arts-related field
• 3-5 years teaching experience at the K-12 level
• A passion for music and early childhood education
• Dynamic speaking skills
• Proficient piano performance skills with a commercial music emphasis
• Basic jazz knowledge, including history and performance
