Local artist Monique Luck is fast becoming one of Charlotte’s most accomplished public artists.

She’s already created a site-specific artwork for the Renaissance West community in Charlotte, been featured across the region on ArtPop Street Gallery billboards, is one of five Charlotte-Mecklenburg artists creating new banners for the iconic public artwork “Wind Sculpture” in uptown and is in the final design phase for public artwork for Mecklenburg County’s Druid Hills Park.

Now she’s gearing up to create new public artwork for the city and she needs your help.

Join Luck at a Public Art Community Engagement event from 6-7 p.m. Tuesday, March 19, at West Boulevard Branch Library to inspire the artwork she creates for the West Boulevard/Remount Road intersection.

“My journey as a public artist has been exciting, filled with valuable lessons and inspiring community connections,” Luck said. “I love how art has the power to inspire and connect people on a larger scale.”

The March 19 event is your chance to share about the history and culture of the surrounding neighborhoods and participate in an art-making session.

Community engagement is vital to the public art process of ASC, which commissioned Luck for the project and manages the public art programs for the city and the county. Meaningful dialogue with residents can provide artists with invaluable insights that spark the creative design process.

“I hope to learn more about the rich history of the community, uncovering cherished moments and stories that have shaped the lives of its residents,” Luck said.

The public artwork is funded by the City of Charlotte, through the Corridors of Opportunity Program, and will support city efforts to create a safe, walkable pedestrian environment at the intersection through the installation of a decorative plaza, a multiuse path, bus shelters, lighting, landscaping and other enhancements.

“I’m excited to see how the West Boulevard improvements will bring beauty and transformation to the corridor,” she said.

All are welcome to participate in the free community engagement; advance RSVP in requested.
