SUMMARY:African Diaspora Music and Dance
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Moving Spirits\nWhen: Mondays through December 17 (6pm)\nWhere: Tuckaseegee Recreation Center (94820 Tuckaseegee Rd\, Charlotte\, NC 28208) \nAfrican Diaspora Music & Dance workshops brings heritage to the Charlotte community through dance and music workshops. The program will occur from November through December 2024\, at our partner location at the Tuckaseegee Recreation Center. Workshops will restart again in February 2025. \nThe workshops will be facilitated by Tamara Williams (dance) and Luciano Xavier (music). The workshops consist of drumming rhythms of the African Diaspora and the accompanying dance/movement forms. During the workshops\, participants will learn the historical and cultural contextualization of Black arts as they practice an array of movements and rhythms. A variety of dances and music will be taught including traditional African American Ring Shout\, African-Brazilian Orixá dances\, Samba Afro\, Samba Reggae\, Danca Afro\, Rumba and Palo (Cuba)\, and others. These dances have been staples of resistance and resilience in Black communities globally. Participants are encouraged to bring percussive instruments (including household items) that can be utilized for drumming during drumming workshops. Huntersville\, NC 28078)\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\nDear Soul Music Co Presents the EXPLORE: Community Concert Series (formerly known as the Unplugged+Live Concert Series)! Sponsored by the ASC Culture Blocks\, a community partnership funded by Mecklenburg County. This touring concert series features live performances featuring local and touring music artists. Host and opening set by Charlotte\, singer-songwriter\, ARSENA. \nMusic will start promptly at 11am. \nOur featured performer includes a full-band performance by Destiny Stone: \nDestiny Stone blends gospel\, blues\, & jazz to create lyrics and soulful melodies that leave her audiences inspired. Over the past 5 years\, Destiny has most notably performed at The Fillmore in Charlotte\, NC; performed an original song for John Oates of Grammy winning duo Hall and Oates\, and performed as a part of the U.S. National Trust for Historic Preservation’s National Treasure dedication celebration for the renowned Nina Simone. Most recently\, Destiny opened up for The Shindellas\, a rising\, Nashville-based girl-group\, and for the Grammy nominated trio The Tones\, formerly known as The Hamiltones. She was also nominated for a 2019 Carolina Music Award and featured on the cover of the Salisbury Magazine March 2020 Issue. Born in the state capital\, Jackson\, and raised in Holly Springs\, Mississippi\, Destiny moved to North Carolina to pursue a degree in Popular Music where she graduated from Catawba College in 2018. Destiny currently lives in Salisbury\, NC and is also a music educator\, worship leader\, wife and mom.
