African Diaspora Music & Dance workshops brings heritage to the Charlotte community through dance and music workshops. The program will occur from November through December 2024, at our partner location at the Tuckaseegee Recreation Center. Workshops will restart again in February 2025.
The workshops will be facilitated by Tamara Williams (dance) and Luciano Xavier (music). The workshops consist of drumming rhythms of the African Diaspora and the accompanying dance/movement forms. During the workshops, participants will learn the historical and cultural contextualization of Black arts as they practice an array of movements and rhythms. A variety of dances and music will be taught including traditional African American Ring Shout, African-Brazilian Orixá dances, Samba Afro, Samba Reggae, Danca Afro, Rumba and Palo (Cuba), and others. These dances have been staples of resistance and resilience in Black communities globally. Participants are encouraged to bring percussive instruments (including household items) that can be utilized for drumming during drumming workshops. This program is appropriate for ages 8+ and all levels of dance and drumming.
