City of Kannapolis - Event and Cultural Arts Coordinator

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES

  • Plans, coordinates, implements, and supervises a variety of recreational activities and special events for the City of Kannapolis

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed

  • Plans, organizes, and promotes recreation activities for various age groups including such programs as leisure classes, special events, athletics, and other activities
  • Arranges schedules, locations, and personnel to staff such activities
  • Instructs and supervises volunteers, contract programmers, and paid staff
  • Assigns, reviews and assures standards and requirements are being met
  • Promotes programs and events
  • Solicits donations or sponsorships
  • Contacts the media, prepares press releases, flyers, and brochures for promotions
  • Evaluates the interests of the community concerning recreation programming
  • Meets with neighborhood and homeowner associations, public agencies, church and civic groups, and local businesses to advise groups of upcoming programs, and to seek input regarding areas of programming ideas
  • Locates and secures remote public, private, and quasi-public facilities for programming use
  • Acts as liaison with these groups
  • Responsible for managing registrations system
  • Schedules times and secures locations for a variety of programs, performances, and special events
  • Registers participants for various recreational programs and events
  • Collects fees and completes proper forms
  • Maintains record of programs and events
  • Assists in the preparation of the departmental budget
  • Makes recommendations for the programming budget
  • Assists in the management of the budget
  • Processes purchase orders, maintains a current inventory of all program material and supplies
  • Monitors and assists in ensuring a clean and neat appearance of the parks and recreation facilities
  • To include some maintenance of such facilities as required
  • Assists with other departmental activities as needed
  • Assists in the preparation of regular and special reports as needed 
  • Performs other related duties as required

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Considerable knowledge of principles, practices, and methods of recreational and leisure time programs
  • Considerable knowledge of current literature, trends, and developments in the field of public recreation
  • Knowledge of a variety of athletic events, their rules, and their procedures
  • Knowledge of standard resources, materials, and facilities utilized in a public recreational program
  • Knowledge and ability to plan, execute, over-see, and deliver a variety of special events
  • Ability to effectively plan and execute a year-round program of recreational activities
  • Ability to plan and coordinate the work of contract programmers, and of temporary, volunteer, or paid workers
  • Ability to express ideas effectively and communicate effectively in verbal and written forms
  • Knowledge of routine maintenance tasks necessary to operate facilities in a safe and effective manner
  • Ability to deal tactfully with the public
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with officials, citizens, employees, contractors, supervisors, participants, athletic associations, and other nearby P&R Departments

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Requires graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a degree in recreation administration or related field, with at least three years experience in program implementation and/or special events
  • CPRP preferred

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions
  • Must be able to perform medium work exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects
  • Must possess the visual acuity to prepare and analyze data, operate a computer terminal, utilize measuring devices, operate a motor vehicle, and inspect work of others
