Teaching Artist Job Description

Charlotte Ballet is seeking talented Teaching Artists to join the Education & Community Engagement team for the 2024-2025 school year. The goal of the teaching artists is to promote a positive environment while integrating dance lesson plans using the North Carolina Standards. The Teaching Artist will report to Charlotte Ballet Director of Education & Community Engagement.

Charlotte Ballet’s Education & Community Engagement programming engages students, teachers and the community-at-large in a range of artistic activities that allow them to learn about dance as an art form. Teaching Artists teach by project but the ideal candidate would be teaching weekly through the school year in our afterschool program and workshops.

Teaching Artists will typically work offsite from the Charlotte Ballet studios and offices at schools, park, and recreation centers, may teach virtually via Zoom. They will work with students of a variety of ages, experience, abilities, and backgrounds. Through innovative programs, dynamic performances and collaborative partnerships Charlotte Ballet makes dance accessible to all communities and has a strong commitment to sharing the dance art form with everyone.

Job Description

  • Introducing students to foundational ballet training through Ballet I curriculum or a specialized dance style in adherence to the mission, vision and values of the organization for a Reach program Teaching Artist
  • Teach dance to various Education & Community Engagement programs including but not limited to Ballet, Jazz, Modern, West African and/or other dance disciplines
  • Identify appropriate goals for guiding the class through curriculum
  • Plan each class with a genre-appropriate warm-up, progressive exercises, and conclusion
  • Instruct students through clear explanation, demonstration, and lesson reinforcement (repetition)
  • Choreography and coaching for school year classes assigned
  • Complete Mid-Year and Year-End Student Evaluations as assigned
  • Able to build a dance lesson that align with the North Carolina Essential Standards course of study for those who are teaching in schools and arts-integrated lessons
  • Introduce approaches that enable students to represent their ideas through movement exploration, creation and in performance
  • Attend faculty and curriculum meetings as assigned

Qualifications & Competencies

  • BA or BFA in dance, K-12 certification or at least 3-5 years dance teaching experience.
  • Practicing artists, who have 3-5 years professional performing experience
  • Proficient dance teacher in one of the following areas, Ballet, Modern, Jazz, African, Latin or other disciplines
  • Teaching experience in dance classroom settings, dance studio or community
  • Are committed to culturally responsive and inclusive teaching practices, as well as creating a classroom environment where every student is seen, values and feels a sense of belonging
  • Able to choreograph and demonstrate the skills that have been worked on in the classroom
  • Instruct with positive and inclusive classroom management
  • Reliable transportation/ability to travel throughout the Charlotte Mecklenburg area
  • Outstanding communication skills
  • Ability to work with a variety of dancers
  • Able to teach virtually and in person

Compensation: $40-47.00/hour

Pay: $40.00 – $47.00 per hour
