ASC is committed to supporting a comprehensive education system that provides equitable access and high-quality learning experiences for all Charlotte-Mecklenburg students.  Last year alone, thanks to funding from local corporate and individual donors, the City of Charlotte, Mecklenburg County, the North Carolina Arts Council, and the U.S. Department of Education, ASC invested over $700,000 to support programs impacting CMS students and teachers.  We believe that education and participation in the arts, science and history are vital to the development of our children and our communities and have every intention of continuing our investment in resources to serve teachers, students and other learners.  Unfortunately, due to major cuts in FY11 Educational funding from Mecklenburg County, ASC has had to re-imagine our funding plans for this coming school year.

ASC has developed a revised funding model for 2010-2011 that provides approved cultural organizations and artists with access to grant funds that can be used to subsidize in–school programming and projects.  To facilitate this process, ASC has partnered with the United Arts Council of Raleigh & Wake County, Inc. to produce an Education Provider Directory that identifies artists and organizations in Mecklenburg County and the surrounding region who provide high quality arts, science and history programming aligned with the North Carolina Standard Course of Study (NCSCOS).

While this plan is not as comprehensive as we had hoped, we feel it best utilizes the limited resources we currently have and provides the greatest amount of equitable access across the county. In addition to grant funding, ASC will continue to invest in high quality professional development programs for local teachers, teaching artists and education staff within organizations. Stay tuned for more news on these programs as they are finalized.
