Charlotte-Mecklenburg Creative Vitality Index

The Creative Vitality Index is an annual measure of the health of the creative economy in a city, county, state or other geographic area. The creative economy as defined in the Creative Vitality Index includes for-profit and not-for-profit arts-related enterprises. Using readily available, inexpensive data on employment and community participation, the Creative Vitality Index reflects the vigor of this sector of the economy and culture.

Americans for the Arts has released its new National Arts Index. This report represents a major milestone for arts in America. Never before has there been a single and annually produced measure of the health and vitality of the arts in America. This report covers an 11-year period, from 1998 to 2008.

Arts & Economic Prosperity III

Arts & Economic Prosperity III, published in 2007 and conducted by Americans for the Arts, provides compelling new evidence that the nonprofit arts and culture are a significant industry in Charlotte-Mecklenburg—one that generates $157.96 million in local economic activity. This spending–$61.94 million by nonprofit arts and culture organizations and an additional $96.02 million in event-related spending by their audiences—supports 4,771 full-time equivalent jobs, generates $92.95 million in household income to local residents, and delivers $14.06 million in local and state government revenue. This economic impact study sends a strong signal that when we support the arts, we not only enhance our quality of life, but we also invest in Charlotte-Mecklenburg’s economic well-being.
